What is Shaken Baby Syndrome?

*   It is a serious brain injury
*   May occur when a baby's head is slammed against a hard object or surface
*   Often occurs when a baby is violently shaken, causing the brain to move about inside the skull
*   Is often done out of anger or frustration, often triggered by unconsolable crying
*   It is a very preventable form of child abuse

Symptoms of SBS

*   Limp or lethargic
*   Trouble breathing
*   Poor sucking or swallowing
*   Irritability
*   Seizures or trembling
*   Vomiting
*   Pale or bluish skin
*   Unresponsive/will not wake up

SBS Statistics

*   It is estimated that 1200-1400 cases of SBS occur each year in the United States
*   The average age of SBS victims is six months
*   1 shaken baby in 4 dies as a result of SBS
*   The 3 shaken babies in 4 that do not die will suffer serious permanent damage
*   More than 60% of the victims of SBS are male
*   More than 80% of the perpetrators of SBS are male
*   50% of offenders are natural parents
*   17% of offenders are the mother's boyfriend
